Peripheral neuropathy is a type of damage to the nervous system. It can cause problems with sensation and movement. Peripheral neuropathy often affects the hands and feet, but it can also affect other parts of the body. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and they may get worse over time.
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can include things like:

In addition, there is a strong connection between autoimmune diseases and peripheral neuropathy. Autoimmune diseases are often the underlying cause of peripheral neuropathy, and the two conditions share many common features. Both conditions involve damage to the nervous system, and both can cause pain, numbness, and weakness. In addition, both conditions can be difficult to diagnose and treat. This is why thorough testing is vitally important to helping peripheral neuropathy.
Absolutely! The key to healing nerve damage is to identify and address the underlying cause of the neuropathy. Once the cause is addressed, the nerves can begin to heal. However, in order for the nerves to heal effectively, four factors must be taken into account:
- The severity of the damage
- The type of damage (e.g. axonal, demyelinating)
- The presence of any other underlying conditions
- The level of support and care provided to the nerves during healing
You have sensory nerves (both small fiber nerves and large diameter nerves) and motor nerves (that control movement of your muscles.) Please note: if there is muscle weakness from neuropathy for greater than two years the damage to the muscles will probably be permanent!
